β¦ Synopsis
The picture shows the absolute configurations of regiolone and isosclerone, two enan tiomeric bioactive napthalenone pentaketides produced by fungi and plants. Isoscler one is produced by the plant pathogen Botrytis cinerea, whereas regiolone is produced by B. fabae. The phytotoxic activity of both compounds was tested in comparison on faba bean (host of both pathogens) and vine (host of only B. cinerea), showing that the R configuration at C4 is a fundamental structural feature for the bioactivity. The background picture depicts the typical chocolate spots on plant leaves induced by Bot rytis fabae. Details are discussed in the article by A. Evidente et al. on p. 5564ff.
