Cooling the device to 77 ยฐ K permits a useful power level of greater than 25 mw to be achieved as a result of the increase in efficiency.
The GAE-402 can be used in conjunction with any suitable light detecting device to form a solid-state optical communication system.
The high carrier frequency, broad information bandwidth, line-of-sight type of communication system possible with the GAE-402 makes the device suitable for many applications, especially those able to exploit its compact, low weight, low power characteristics.
Such applications include secure battlefield communication and secure line-of-sight transmission systems featuring portability and solid-state reliability. The wide bandwidth capability of the GAE-402 also makes possible ground burst and air burst fuze systems and battlefield range finding applications.
