## Abstract A consistent definition of ‘truth’ is presented to define the errors in a numerical weather prediction (NWP) forecast, analysis and observations resulting from the unresolved turbulent field. ‘Truth’ is defined as the convolution of the continuous atmospheric variables by the effective
