โœฆ Synopsis

FOUR FIGURES

This report deals with the growth of roots after x-irradiatiori during the period of maximum growth. Irradiation at this time produces an immediate reversible inhibition of growth (section I). The growth after irradiation is often interrupted by another temporary growth arrest. The resulting growth curves show great diversity. However, they can be analyzed into a small number of distinct components, each of which is closely comparable, or T~omologozcs, to some type of reaction found in dry seeds. The observation of a succession of different reaction types in the same plant is added evidence f o r discrcte growth mechanisms which respond differently to irradiation (section I T ) . Development is accompanied by a general rise in sensitivity, but not to thc same amount for diff erent reactions (section III).

The plants -used were Nung beans (Phascolus aureus) as before ; the type of radiation, roentgen rays produced at 100 kVp, unfiltered. The target distance had to be increased to 30 ern to obtain uniform irradiatioii of a field large enough lo coiitairi growing plants. The dosage rate was reduced to 165 r/minute.
