Abstract

The dispersion of melanosomes in the darkness‐induced darkening of Xenopus tailfin melanophores does not occur in an oxygen‐free medium. When such tails are restored to lighted conditions in the presence of oxygen, dispersion takes place as an “after effect” indicating that light reception and melanosome dispersion are two separate components of the tail‐darkening reaction. Aggregation of tailfin melanosomes is also inhibited by the absence of oxygen.
