BACKGROUND. Tissue inhibitors of nietalloproteinases (TIMPs) act as negative regulators of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) that degrade extracellular matrix. We evaluated the metastatic ability of the highly metastatic human gastric cell line KKLS, and that of cells transfected with exogenous TIMP-
