✦ Synopsis

A simple mendelian model, with two alleles at an autosomal locus, is suggested for the inheritance of the two colour phenotypes of Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum -the dominant (wild type) allele causes a dark grey colouration, while the recessive phenotype is pink.

C. nigrofasciatum, a fresh water cichlid, is a substrate breeder, like other species of the genus Cichlasoma. It is indigenous to Central America, mainly Panama, Costa-Rica and Salvador (Sterba, 1962). C. nigrofasciatum is a popular aquarium fish due to its colour, reproductive behaviour, and ease of reproduction (Axelrod, 1967; Goldstein, 1970). It is also widely used for behavioural studies (Fern0 & Sjolander, 1976; Holzberg & Schr6der, 1975; Weber & Weber, 1976). In this paper a simple mendelian inheritance of the body colouration of grey and pink is suggested.
