Abstract

The design of information storage and retrieval systems has traditionally privileged persons and topics (β€œsubjects”). Persons are important both as creators and as topics, but the focus has been personal identity and, through Name Authority Files, the disambiguation of different persons with the same name and different names for the same person. Topics tend to include any concept that has not given separate treatment (as persons and places often are). The treatment of events has received less attention. In this short paper / poster we examine the characteristics of events, both in general and, more specifically, biographical events, the episodes in persons' lives.
