The International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) with cooperation from its Chinese National Committee on Irrigation and Drainage (CNCID) successfully organized its 19th International Congress on Irrigation and Drainage in September 2005 in Beijing, China. The theme of the Congress was ''Use of Water and Land for Food Security and Environmental Sustainability''. The keynote address of the President, ICID, touched upon the hunger and malnutrition which causes tremendous human suffering, kills more than 5 million children every year, and costs developing countries billions of dollars in lost productivity and national income.
