✦ Synopsis

Infrared data and solid-matrix room-temperature. phosphorescence data were correlated with the Young's modulus data of filter paper which contained various amounts of adsorbed moisture. The results acquired and results from earlier work revealed new insights into the effects of moisture on the phosphorescence quenching of adsorbed phosphors. The hydrogen-bonding network in the amorphous region of filter paper was very influential in permitting room-temperature phosphorescence occur. In addition, moisture adsorption resulted in a decrease in the modulus of filter paper which, in turn, had a major affect on the magnitude of intensity of solid-matrix phosphorescence. The concept of the filter paper matrix participating in the quenching of phosphorescence with the adsorption of moisture on paper was considered.
