β¦ Synopsis
The infrared (IR) spectra of the vapour phases above NbCl, and MoCl, have been studied at elevated temperatures. All five IR-active fundamentals of NbCl,(g) of D,, symmetry have been observed. In the vapour above MoCl, two different species have been found. At the beginning of the experiment an oxychloride species was formed due to some oxygen impurity which is concluded to be MoOCl,. Subsequently, Mot&(g) was formed for which four IR-active fundamentals have been observed, the spectrum being consistent with a D,, symmetry also.
