✦ Synopsis

lzCz and %a were efficiently produced by a dc discharge of H'%N, Hi'CN and '*C2H2 and their matrix absorption and emission spectra in the infrared and the near-infrared region have been studied. Laser excitation of the 2-O and 3-O A 'IIU+ X 'q Phillips bands leads to both A 'II, -DX 'Ez emission, as well as to b 'q +a 'II,, fluorescence resulting from nonradiative intersystem crossing. Consecutive two-photon absorption results in a strong blue emission in the visible attributable to the d 'IIs +a "I& Swan system. The spectroscopic constants for all the observed states in solid neon have been obtained and compared with the values in the gas phase. The relaxation mechanisms leading to population of the b 'E; state are discussed.

The results of experimental studies of fluorescence and phosphorescence of acridine, selectively excited within its absorption band, in a crystalline host lattice of 2,3-dimethylnaphthalene, are reported. The energies of the first excited singlet and triplet states of acridine in this crystalline ma
