✦ Synopsis

Abstract

The vibrational spectra of (C~5~H~12~NO~2~S^+^Β·NO~3~^βˆ’^) crystals were studied and the observed IR and Raman lines were assigned. The two protonated methioninium cations exist in two different conformations. Although the crystal structure is stabilized by a three‐dimensional network of intermolecular hydrogen bonds, the latter are also responsible for the changes in the position and intensity of some bands. Strong Oο£ΏHΒ·Β·Β· O bonds involving the carboxyl group and normal Nο£ΏHΒ·Β·Β· O bonds involving the amino group were found from the vibrational spectra. Copyright Β© 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A comparative study of the infrared and Raman spectra of L-valine nitrate and L-leucine nitrate helps in determining the role of hydrogen bonds in these crystals. Both compounds have carboxylic and protonated amino groups in the cation while the nitrate ion forms the anion. The wavenumbers of severa
