✦ Synopsis

Informed ConsentÐEast Meets WestÐWorlds Apart? ``... that which is done under compulsion, or by reason of ignorance is involuntary. The voluntary would seem to be that of which the moving principle is the agent himself, he being aware of the particular circumstances of his action''. (ARISTOTLE 384-322 BC in Nicomachean Ethics Book III, Chapter 1 s20 p.351 l947).

The collection of ethical beliefs upon which consent procedures are formulated appear to be unique to particular societies based upon the society's history, culture and religious beliefs.

During the author's visit to China [1], it soon became apparent that there are vast differences between the philosophies and medical practices of the East and West. This paper highlights some of those differences and, in the process, emphasises the underlying principles of informed consent in the West.
