β¦ Synopsis
This article examines the process of information transmission in adaptive, viable organizational systems. Beer's viable system model is used to explain a system's information requirement at each time of the adaptation process, the source of this information and the effect of information transmission on a system's cohesion. Four hypotheses are stated and tested empirically with data collected among insurance agents in Australia.

This paper deals with the problem of minimising the transmission cost in an EDI system and proves the optimality of a policy which minimizes the slack of partial sums under conditions with practical interpretations. This policy is shown to be useful as a heuristic in more general cases.
