✦ Synopsis

This book presents as formal papers nearly all of the lectures given at the Nato Advanced study institute on Computer Architecture held at St. Raphael, France from September 12-24, 1976.

Computer architecture is a very diverse and expanding subject, consequently the lectures concentrated on live main subject areas: specific computer architectures, language oriented machines, associative processing, computer networks and specification and design methods. In addition, an overall emphasis was placed on distributed and parallel processing and the need for an integrated hardware-software approach to design.

Though some introductory material is included, this book is primarily intended for workers in the field of computer science and engineering who wish to update themselves on current topics in computer architecture. Contents: G. Bell: What we have learned from the PDP-11. G. Boulaye: Structured Systems. K. Bowden: Introduction to computer architecture. D. Davies: Introduction to packetswitching. Modelling as a tool of network design. Security in networks. H. Gallaire: Influence of high level languages on computer architecture. F. Heath: Specification and evaluation of computer systems. R. Lea: Associative processing of non-numerical information. D. Lewin: Introduction to associative processors. F. Summer: An assessment of the MUS computer systems. W. Wilner: Problem language oriented architecture.

These papers will be listed with abstract in the bibliographical section.
