✦ Synopsis

This paper describes the influence of the design of the shell of the l O-kJ chemical ignitor on the violence of dust explosions of maize starch and aluminium powders in a commonly used 20-1itre spherical bomb. The pressure~time curves indicate that the shell design influences the additional turbulence in the dust cloud induced by the ignitor, and therefore also influences the explosion violence (Kst and Pmax) of the dusts.
