β¦ Synopsis
The oxygen electrode reaction which occurs on the surfaces of the solid 0 2-1on conductors is used in many devices of practical interest such as oxygen gauges, fuel cells and oxygen pumps. However its elemefitary steps are still doubtful. Almost all the a priori possible processes have been proposed as the limiting step of the overall reaction: gaseous oxygen diffusion within the metallic pores of the electrode, diffusion of dissolved oxygen through the O 2 ion conductor, diffusion of dissolved oxygen through the metallic electrode, adsorption of oxygen either on this electrode or on the electrolyte. Reviews of the literature pertinent to this topic can be found in recent papers 1' 2. This situation is mostly due to the scarcity of experimental evidence. As an attempt to improve it, we studied the influence of the electrolyte composition and the nature of the metal forming the electrode on the steady state voltage-intensity characteristic of the electrode reaction.
