✦ Synopsis
In an earlier publication (Engng Fractive Me& 32,249-258 (1989)) a stochastic fracture criterion was derived for a brittle body with population of crack-like defects under abritrary triaxial load. In this work the above criterion was applied to a nonuniform distribution of defect orientations, whose dispersion about the most preferred orientation is described by a bivariate normal distribution, The limiting fracture surfaces for different reliability levels and different positions of the most preferred orientation were obtained. It was shown that for weak nonuniformity the limiting surfaces practically do not differ from their counterparts derived for a uniform distribution. The higher the nonunifo~ity of the distribution, the stronger the distortion of the limiting surfaces compared with their "uniform" counterparts. Under weak nonuniformity all limiting fracture surfaces exhibit threefold symmetry regarding the spatial diagonal of the principal stress space. Under strong nonuniformity this symmetry is preserved only if the diagonal coincides with the most preferred orientation. It was also shown that introduction of "closed" cracks (i.e. cracks subjected to shear under compressive normal stress) permits assessment of fracture stress under purely compressive loads.
