✦ Synopsis
Aqueous micellar solutions containing cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and solubilized 2,2,2-trifluoro-1-( 9 -anthryl)-ethanol (TFAE) known to exhibit photorheological effects were investigated via (i) oscillatory shear viscometry, (ii) electrically induced birefringence, and (iii) dynamic light scattering. The presence of TFAE induces the formation of rod-like micelles as revealed directly from electrically induced birefringence and indirectly from viscoelastic flow behavior. In situ photodimerization of TFAE leads to reduced elasticity caused by a decrease in micelle size, as shown by light scattering data as well as by analysis of rheological data. Two shear stress relaxation mechanisms are resolved from relaxation spectra. (\odot 1993) Academic Press, Inc.
