โฆ Synopsis
A series of fourteen nitrated diazooxides has been studied. Their ability to sensitize the primary explosive lead azide to stab initiation has been assessed on pressed 1 : 10 admixtures and the results correlated with thermocbemical properties of the diazooxides. Ignition temperature was found to be important but its quantitative effect was masked by other variables. Heat of ignition (decomposition) was adequate for reliable propagation in all cases and increase in this parameter did not necessarily result in increased sensitizing ability. The rate of energy release at ignition, although only qualitatively determined, appeared to exhibit the closest correlation with sensitization. A model for the initiation processes is outlined.
