โœฆ Synopsis

Bmdmg of Ll+ and Na+ by a series of ten benzo-13-crown-4 compounds and a series of fifteen 14-crown-4 denvatlves has been assessed by puxate extractlon and the response of polymenc membrane electrodes Vanatlon m catlon selectmty was observed when different groups were attached to the central carbon atom of the three-carbon bridges m the lonophores For the benzo-13-crown-4 series, only weak c&on bmdmg and low selectwlty was observed m both the plcrate extractlon and polymenc membrane electrode systems For the 14-crown-4 series, 6,13-dlmethylenyl-1Ccrown4 exhibited the highest LI+ selechvlty m plcrate extration

In polymenc membrane electrodes, considerably higher LI+ select~vlty was observed wrath 6,6,13-tnbenzyl-14crown-4 and 6,6,13,13-tetraethyl-14-crown-4 than with the commercially avadable h+ lonophore 6,6-dlbenzyl-14-c-4

Lack of correlation for the LI+ selectmtles of the 14-crown-4 compounds m the puzrate extraction and polymeric membrane electrode systems reveals a profound influence of the matnx on lonophore selectlvlty
