✦ Synopsis

The influence of particle size distribution of individual minerals of a modelled sulphoaluminate belite cement clinker containing the phases C2S, C4A3Sand CS on the hydration kinetics was studied by X-ray diffraction analysis, and differential calorimetry. The surface area of the phases controls the concentrations of different ions in the nonequilibrium liquid phase and by this way determines the mechanism of formation of hydrated products in the system. Results show that the particle sizes of the anhydrite influence significantly on the kinetics and mechanism of precipitation of hydrates in the initial period. Whereas in the presence of fine particles of C2S leads to the retardation of reaction processes.

The effect of EDTA, a calcium chelating agent, on the early hydration of Portland cement, C3Sand B-C2S has been studied by solution analysis and electron microscopy. EDTA is a retarder of cement hydration. Under normal conditions of hydration, the silica levels in solution are very low (<0.05 raM) b
