It is shown that, in the complete absence of oxygen, no light is emitted when gases such as Nz. Hz, CO ye contacted with a thoria surtke. In the presence of minute amounts of oxygen, the emission of li@t icln be much mole intense than when ptire oxygen is used at the same partial pressure.
