✦ Synopsis

Li+, C s + , Rb+, and K+ inhibit the clonal growth rate of Hydra littoralis and, depending upon conditions, can be toxic to the animals. These effects are counteracted by increasing the concentration of Na+ in the environment. In contrast to its inhibitory effect, K+, when in the presence of high concentrations of Na+, increases the growth rate of hydra significantly. Choline and histidine also increase the growth rate, but to a lesser extent. Various combinations of the monovalent ions lead to specific structural and behavioral changes in the animals. The effects of monovalent cations on the internal pH of yeast were studied. Our former procedure was modified, inducing maximal alkalinization of the cells with 100 mM-NH4OH instead of Tris base. The pH values were lower than reported before (PeΓ±a et al., J. Baceteriol. 1995 177, 1017-1022). With gl

When lymphocytes were exposed to a medium containing an EGTA concentration that resulted in an ionized Calcium (Ca) of less than 10 ΞΌM, K exodus began to increase. The effects of monovalent and divalent cations on the cell viability of an extremely halophilic bacteria H. mediterrunei were examined. High magnesium concentrations ( 2 72 m) were required for stabilization of H. rnediterranei cells, although calcium ions were more potent than magnesium in preservi
