Spectroscopic studies are reported of Crs3+ : LiNbOs and of Cr3+-doped MgO-LiNbOa, with different C?+ doping levels. A knowledge of the defect structure of melt grown crystals enables an assignment of the R-line structure of C?+ ions to independent optical eentres involving Nb'+ and Li+ ion sites. S
