The swelling and plastic properties of a low volatile bituminous coal pyrolysed in the presence of added Ca compounds have been investigated. The results suggest that the addition of CaO significantly reduced the swelling and plastic behaviour of coal at low pressures (< 0.1 MPa) of H, or He. Howeve

โฆ Synopsis
An approach has been developed to reduce the swelling and caking behaviour of coals, using K and Ca additives applied in combination. However, the exact mechanisms of the increased activity of the additives in combination are not completely understood. It is known that Ca loses activity with time by the loss in dispersion. This study shows that K additives form various compounds by the interaction with coal minerals. It is proposed that when K and Ca additives are applied in combination, the activity of the combined system is optimized by the formation of a relatively more stable complex, which reduces the swelling of coal even under very high severity conditions (2.9 MPa hydrogen, 5 K min-').
