โฆ Synopsis
An equation for streaming potential is obtained which incorporates the influence of the ion diffusion along the capillary axis and liquid flow inside a porous gel layer located on the capillary walls. The analysis presented shows that the diffusion influence is significant at Peclet numbers less than (\approx 50). It is shown that the effect of liquid flow inside the porous gel layer is negligible when the gel layer porosity (m) is low enough ( (m) <0.7); however, at higher values of (m) utilization of the Smoluchowski equation for the gel layer-liquid interface potential determination becomes incorrect and it is necessary to use the equation obtained in the paper for the streaming potential calculation. ยฎ 1993 Academic Press, Inc.
