In the present work the effect of copper oxide addition on the densification behavior and electrical conductivity of BaCe 1-x Gd x O 3-ฮด (BCG) type ceramics is investigated. Small addition (1 mol%) of this sintering additive reduces both the calcination temperature (by โˆผ250 โ€ข C) and the sintering temperature (by โˆผ150 โ€ข C) and promotes at the same time the densification process. According to the X-ray diffraction analysis the BaCe 1-x Gd x O 3-ฮด samples with 0 โ‰ค x โ‰ค 0.2 and the BaCe 0.9-y Gd 0.1 Cu y O 3-ฮด samples with 0.0075 โ‰ค y โ‰ค 0.07 are single-phase. It was found that the samples with Cu, when sintered at 1450 โ€ข C for 3 h, have โˆผ95% of relative density compared with pure BaCe 0.9 Gd 0.1 O 3-ฮด samples that have โˆผ86%. It was also found that the electrical conductivity of Cu-containing samples sintered at 1450 โ€ข C is comparable to those without Cu sintered at 1600 โ€ข C in oxidizing and reducing atmospheres. Cu-containing samples exhibit significantly higher conductivity in both air and hydrogen atmosphere.

We investigated processing, microstructure and superconducting properties of Gd123 single grain bulk superconductors with a large amount of BaCeO 3 . The melt-textured bulk samples with compositions of Gd123 : BaCeO 3 : Gd211 = 100 : 40ร€x : x (x = 0-40) plus 20 wt.% of Ag 2 O and 0.5 wt.% of Pt were
