✦ Synopsis

Based on the Lagrangian formulation, we present a new ¨ariational approach to study the influence of cross-phase modulation on solitonlike pulse switching in twin-core fiber couplers and birefringent fibers. For self-routing pulse switching we found an excellent agreement between our finite-dimensional Hamiltonian system and the split-step Fourier method.
