Abstract

Six chelating agents were applied regularly in solution to cabbage plants and to wheat plants growing in an acid and in an alkaline soil. The contents of iron, manganese, copper, zinc, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus were determined in the dry matter of the plants at several stages of growth and the results were examined statistically. On the alkaline soil, chelate treatments led to increased concentration of most of the nutrients determined, low manganese contents were recorded when the iron content was large. Under acid conditions the iron and manganese contents of all plants was increased by chelate treatment of the soil. The influence on the remaining nutrients was variable.

The chelating agents were resistant to nitrification in soil under conditions favourable to this process.
