Influence of bitter gourd (Momordica charantia) on growth and blood constituents in albino rats

Feeding of bitter gourd (Mornordica charantia) at 0.02, 0.1 and 0.5% (dry weight) levels in a semi-synthetic diet for a period of 8 weeks did not have any adverse influence on the food intake, growth and organ weights of normal adult rats. The haematological parameters of these experimental rats were also normal. Serum choleslerol levels of the rats receiving 0.5% bitter gourd were significantly lower than those of the control rats. There was no hypoglycaemic effect of bitter gourd in these normoglycaemic rats.

Zusammenfassung

EinfluS der Balsamgurke (Moinardica charnntia) auf Wachstum und Blutbestandteile von Albinoratten Die Fiitterung von Balsamgurke (Momordica charantia) in Anteilen von 0,02, 0,l und 0,5% (Trockengewicht) in einer halbsynthetischen Diit uber 8 Wochen fiihrte zu keiner negativen Becinflussung von Futteraufnahme, Wachstum und Organgewichten normaler erwachsener Ratten. Auch die hamatologischen Parameter dieser experimentellen Ratten waren normal. Die Serumchoiesterolspiegel der Ratten, die 0,5% Balsamgurke erhalten hatten, waren signifikant niedriger als die der Kontrolltiere. Bei diesen normglycamischen Ratten war kein hypoglycamischer Effekt zu verzeichnen.
