✦ Synopsis

The enantioselectivity of the asymmetric hydrogenation of some unsaturated amino acid precursors with Rh COD 1 BF 4 w Ž .Ž .x and Rh COD 2 ClO as catalyst is influenced by the presence of amphiphiles. Performing the reduction in water, both the 4 activity and the enantioselectivity are enhanced significantly in the presence of surfactants. The determination of the CMC of some surfactants, as well as the reduction in mixtures of waterrmethanol in the presence of amphiphiles, give some evidence for the importance of micelles formation in these enhancements.

The cathodic reduction of oxygen in concentrated potassium hydroxide (15 wt-% H,O) at 225°C is greatly at%cted by the presence of dissolved nickel. This effect shows up both in concentration and activation polarizations. These observations, together with indication8 for the presence of nickel redox
