β¦ Synopsis
The exact relationship between the ratio of successive formation constants of two-step overlapping equilibria and the inflexion points of the formation curve (\tilde{n}=f(p L)) is devised in this paper. It is shown that the position of the inflexion points in the graph of (\bar{n}) against (p L) can be successfully employed to calculate values of the relevant formation constant. The use of the method is illustrated with certain typical cases extracted from the literature. The advantage of using a computer method involving the first derivative of the (\tilde{n}=f(p L)) curve to determine the formation constants of a two-step overlapping equilibria is illustrated. The concept of formation function (average ligand number) has proved again to be very useful in treating complexation equilibria. O 1993 Academic Press, Inc.
