✦ Synopsis

A series of wafer type lip seals that are radially energised by O-rings are arranged along the length of a stuffing box. A stationary sleeve is fitted between the shaft and the seals. As the first seal wears the shaft can be withdrawn an appropriate amount to allow the second seal to be brought into operation on the shaft. A pressurized fluid may be employed between the housing and the O-rings. Flush paths, multipart housings, and baffle-type housings are also disclosed. There are 30 figures of detail.
