**Reviewer:**Edwin C. Hahn, PhD(University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine)
**Description:**This is the third edition of a compendium of wild mammal diseases, last published in 1981, for veterinarians and wildlife biologists. The book is written by 72 contributors.
**Purpose:**The purpose is to provide information about infectious diseases of wildlife. Chapters are arranged by etiologic agent to include information about history, pathogenesis, diagnosis, immunity, and human health implications. The book fulfills a timely niche because of the increased interest in emerging diseases.
**Audience:**The audience includes wildlife biologists and veterinarians, but the book should also be a resource for health providers interested in wildlife carriers of zoonotic infections. The contributors are knowledgeable in their fields. It is more of a reference than a textbook.
**Features:**This new edition has been expanded and now contains details of individual infectious agents within the chapter descriptions of viruses, bacteria, fungi, and rickettsiales. The addition of chapters on new and emerging diseases is welcome to this edition. Chapters dealing with zoonotic diseases are often very complete with sections on management, public health implications, and concerns for domestic animals. Many chapters include epidemiological data, geographical distributions of agents, and their host range. Adequate references refer to the more detailed literature.
**Assessment:**This definitely is an updated version of the previous edition. It should provide an easy-to-use reference to the subject and be useful for some time to come. Information is summarized that would otherwise not be easily located.
