We summarize our recent inelastic neutron scattering results on NaV 2 O 5 . They provided the first experimental evidences for deviations from a simple One-dimensional (1D) spin-Peierls scenario in explaining the formation of the low-temperature singlet ground state in this compound. These neutron s

โฆ Synopsis
Neutron inelastic scattering experiments were carried out on a mixed valent (V 4ฯฉ /V 5ฯฉ ) vanadate LiV 2 O 5 . Observed spin wave excitations suggest that the antiferromagnetic (AF) periodicity along the b-axis (chain) direction is characterized by the doubling of the chemical unit cell. A strong dispersion along the b*-axis, an almost l(stacking)-independent excitations and the low energy excitations down to about 1 meV at the AF zone center were also clearly observed. These results suggest that LiV 2 O 5 can be regarded as independent S 1/2 AF linear chains with a zone boundary energy of 42 ^3 meV estimated from the quantum renormalized spin wave dispersion relation.
