✦ Synopsis

Substitution of a phenyl group in stilbene by a ferrocenyl group remarkably suppresses photochemical isomerization between the cis-and trans-isomers due to acceleration of the deactivation of the cis-triplet to the ground state by the heavy atom effect, prior to the one-way type isomerization in the triplet state. This modification of the stilbene chromophore provides a new mode for controlling photoisomerization and a way for protecting conjugated chain molecules from photodegradation.
