β¦ Synopsis
The government of Sri Lanka has recently introduced a comprehensive environmental action plan and proposed legislation for the control of atmospheric emissions from stationary combustion processes. On the basis of these developments, this paper considers the use and sustainability of biomass as an industrial fuel. Data is presented, arising from a field study, on biomass supply and availability, costs of energy in key industries and the annual environmental burdens due to the emissions of carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides to the atmosphere. Estimates are made of reductions in emissions and improvements in the sustainability of fuelwoods from considerations of the thermal efficiency of combustion plant.
