Endogenous polysaccharides capable of inducing shikonin biosynthesis in a growth medium were isolated from shikonin-producing Lithospermum cells cultured in a production medium. Chemical analysis showed that these active polysaccharides consist of galacturonic acid, galactose, arabinose and glucose.
