โœฆ Synopsis

Extracellular Ca2+, synaptic transmission, and the activation of subsynaptic receptors are not required for the induction of long-term potentiation of excitatory synaptic transmission at stratum radiatum-CAI neuron junctions as long as sufficient depolarizations of the presynaptic terminals and the postsynaptic neurons co-occur.

Hippocampal long-term potentiation (LTP) is widely believed to be a cellular substrate for learning and memory. A likely physiological stimulus for initiating LTP is repetitive neuronal activity, which also results in K + accumulation extracellularly . Therefore, the involvement of elevated extracel

Long-term potentiation (LTP) was examined in the CA1 region of rat hippocampal slices at postnatal day 9 (P9), P15, P30, P60, P90, P120, and P300. A single 100 H z x 1 sec tetanus failed to induce LTP in P9 slices, while similar degrees of LTP were observed at P15, P30, and P60. At P30, changes in p

The functional role of the abundant Zn 2ฯฉ found in some hippocampal synapses has been an enigma. We show here, using N-[6-methoxy-8-quinolyl]-P-toluenesulfonamide (TSQ) staining, that chelatable-Zn 2ฯฉ can be removed from hippocampal synaptic boutons using dietary depletion or with Zn 2ฯฉ chelators. How adenosine leakage and tetanic release might affect long-term potentiation (LTP) was investigated by applying adenosine antagonists 8(p-sulfophenyl)theophylline (8SPT) or 8-cyclopentyl-3,7-dihydro-l,3-dipropyl-l H-purine-2,6-dione (DPCPX) to slices, while recording CA1 field EPSPs and population

CA 3 neurons were excited synaptically by stimulation in the dentate hilus and the stratum radiatum of CA 1 in guinea pig hippocampal slices. Following repetitive stimulation (10--20 c/s, 10 s) of either stimulation site, the amplitudes of orthodromic population spikes or the probability of unitary
