## BACKGROUND. The rate of incidence of esophageal adenocarcinoma has surpassed that of all other malignancies in the U.S. Esophageal adenocarcinoma arises from Barrett's esophagus through the multistep accumulation of genetic mutations in metaplastic cells, accompanied by histologic changes from
