## Abstract Short‐chain fatty acids, such as propionic, __n__‐butyric, __n__‐valeric, isovaleric, __n__‐caproic, and __n__‐caprylic acids, induce alkaline phosphatase activity in cultured mammalian cells. Long‐chain fatty acids have no similar effects. With B‐6 cells (mouse Γ— Chinese hamster cell h
