✦ Synopsis

Circular'dichroism bands can appear at absorption frequencies of achiralmoleculeswhen chiral species (which do not associnte with the achiml molecules> are added to the solution. 'The induced:activity in the achkal species is ntionalised as the result of van der Waals' coupling to the chiral species. An expression is derived for the induced rotatory strength when all molecules in the solution are assumed to bc freely rotating, so that there is no orientational correlation of their relative motions. The application of the theory to the induced activity in carbonyl compounds is qualitatively discussed.

## Abstract The absorption and cicular dichroism spectra of the complex of poly‐L‐lysine (PLL) in the random coil form with methyl orange (MO) have been measured in aqueous solution. A new absorption band is observed at the shorter wavelength compared with that of the free dye. Although MO does not

During the last 5 years or so it has been demonstrated that the light scattered by a multifibered nerve in a bean1 of white light changes as a function of impulse propagation (Hill and Keynes, '49; Hill, '50, '50a; Bryant and Tobias, '52). Early experiments were all done using marine invertebrate ne
