Individual learning is central to organizational learning. The lukasa, an African mnemonic device, is used to illustrate the way in which individuals interpret and shape organizational memory First, the paradox of organizational leaming is examined to understand the role of individual learning within it. Adult learning theory is then used to shed light on how such learning occurs. Finally, conditions are identified that distort the way in which individual learning could contribute effectively to organizational learning.
