โฆ Synopsis
This is not an easy equation and it is one which, I fancy, overstates the author's intentions. 'It is not' he says in the preface, 'a scholarly review of the known facts about closed head injury'. Thus, in the end, the work must be judged on its contribution to the production and presentation of evidence in Court. To this end, the monograph will be of great value to the young doctor or pathologist but will, I fear, be heavy going for the lawyer because the text assumes a considerable medical knowledge in the reader. Some sections are concisely written and are highly inf0rmative-e.g. those relating to external injury and to fracture of the skull-but I doubt if the non-medic would be able to make much of Chapter 2 which is concerned with cerebral herniation. From the pathologist's point of view, this expression of Dr Crompton's great experience in neuropathology often gives cause for self-appraisal-his views, for example, on basal traumatic subarachnoid haemorrhage and his relative unconcern for distinguishing accelerative from decelerative cerebral injury certainly make one pause for thought.
