โœฆ Synopsis

INDIRECT MEASUREMENT OF THE FOUNTAIN EFFECT by C. J. N. VAN DEN MEIJDENBERG, K. W. TACONIS, J. J. M. BEENAKKER and D. H. N. WANSINK Connnunication No. 295c from tile l(amerlingh Onnes laboratorium, Leiden, Nederland Synopsis The fountain heights are measured in the temperature region from 1.4 to 2.1ยฐK in a way quite different from the usual one. The results are found to agree with the fountain heights calculated from H. L o n d o n's formula (making use of the entropy data of K r a m e r s et al. 1) and not with the fountain heights as measured directly by Meyer and Mellink2).

Turbulent He II flow behaviour in superfilters of non-cylindrical shape at large temperature gradients was investigated. It was found that the mass flow rates were always lower than those that would follow from a straightforward extrapolation of results obtained at small temperature gradients; under
