✦ Synopsis

Abstract

During a 9‐month period, 9,772 women were treated at the student health center's gynecology clinic. Herpes simplex virus was isolated from 30 of 57 patients clinically diagnosed as suffering from a herpetic or herpetic‐like genital infection for a virological incidence rate of 0.31%. Using virus plaque diameter in chick embryo cells and heat stability of viral thymidine kinase, 37% of the isolates were classified as herpes simplex virus type 1 and 63% were classified as herpes simplex virus type 2.

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) was isolated from penile lesions of 15 college men. Using (E)-5-(2-bromovinyl)-2'-deoxyuridine sensitivity, monoclonal antibody immunofluorescence, and restriction endonuclease EcoRI digestion of viral DNA, 4 of 15 (26%) isolates were found to be HSV-1, and 11 of 15 (74%)

## Abstract Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV‐1) has been reported increasingly as a cause of genital herpes, although HSV‐1 is usually associated with oro‐labial herpes. In the present study, serum specimens and materials for viral isolation were obtained serially from two patients with recrudescen

Clinical data indicate that the recurring herpes simplex virus (HSV) from oro-labial lesions is HSV subtype 1 and that the virus from genital lesions is HSV-2. This suggests that HSV-1 and HSV-2 reside in latent forms in the trigeminal ganglia and sacral ganglia, respectively. However, the distribut
