✦ Synopsis
Dedicated to Professor Hans Georg von Schnering on the occasion of his 60th birthday
The compounds In'Cl,['* 21 In,Cl, (In:In1"C1,),131 In& (In:Iny'C19),[41 and InCl, r55 6 ] have been unambiguously characterized in the system In-Cl. The phase diagram of the quasi-binary system InCl-InCl, has been investigated repeatedly by thermoanalytical methods.[,-' ' 1 The results indicated that, besides the above-mentioned compounds, a compound of composition In,CI, (InCl1.,,) or In,Cl, (In-Cll,z5) exists. However, this phase has still not been unambiguously characterized chemically or structurally. During our investigations of the system InCl-SnC1z,['ll we discovered a new binary mixed-valent phase of the In-Cl system, since, surprisingly, the redox reaction between In@ and SnZ@ led to the formation of In"' according to the reaction equa-
