Brooklyn, gennaio 2002: nel gelo della notte una donna nuda corre in mezzo al traffico. È stata picchiata, violentata, le è stato fatto lo scalpo. E fra le mani ha dei capelli femminili non suoi. A incaricarsi del caso sono in due: il duro, implacabile investigatore privato Joshua Brolin di Portland e Annabel O'Donnel, detective del 75° distretto. Una prima pista porta in un edificio abbandonato dove, oltre a vari corpi in stato di putrefazione, vengono ritrovate 67 foto di vittime con un codice a barre tatuato sul corpo. Su un muro, una frase in latino scritta col sangue di persone diverse: "Caliban nostro signore, in noi è la vita, perché la carne riluce nelle tenebre".
